Strategies for News Coverage
By Hank Williams

If you own a small business or are part of a non-profit organization, chances are you have come in contact with the news media. And chances are you have had to set up news coverage.
Here’s the scoop if you want to do it successfully.
First you need a strategy. To determine that, you need to ask yourself some very tough questions.

What is my ultimate goal?
Am I prepared for success?
What resources will I need?
What message do I want conveyed?
What is my or my organization’s function?

Sit down and answer these questions honestly. Write your answers down. If you are part of an organization, make sure you tap into the brain trust of the group. Don’t do it alone. If you are the sole proprietor, then seek outside help.
So what is your goal? Do you want coverage at a news conference? Do you want a live interview on set or on location? Do you just want to be interviewed as part of a reporter story. Do you want an extended taped interview? Do you want to be interviewed on the radio? Do you want to be part of a newspaper or magazine article?
Once you have determined your goal, you must be prepared. Many media campaigns fail because those in charge are not prepared. Make sure you are. Define your message and your talking points. If you follow this advice, you’ll be a hit.
